The Labor Party is Australia’s oldest and largest political party. Established in 1891, the ALP is rich in history and represents a broad range of economic and social interests.
WA Labor encourages you to join and make your voice heard - as a member of the Labor Party, you can shape decisions affecting our community, influence the policy of Labor governments and discuss ideas with others members.
Membership of WA Labor is about having a say in Australia’s future.
Reasons to Join the ALP
1. Have your say
Local branches form the basis of the Labor Party and this is where you can have your say on local, State and national issues. Local branches are often lively and interesting with debates, guest speakers, and social functions.
2. Shape the policy of Labor governments
Membership of the Labor Party allows you to shape decisions that affect our community. You can become active and influence Party policy by joining a policy committee.
3. Help Labor win elections
One of the most important and interesting activities for Labor Party members is campaigning. Candidates are always eager for assistance, and you can play your part in planning and implementing an election campaign. As a member of the Labor Party, you also have the right to stand for selection as a Labor candidate for Parliament.
4. Meet new people who share Labor values
By becoming active in your local branch you will meet like-minded people and have the opportunity to enjoy social events, functions, dinners and other activities with Party members and Labor MP’s.
5. Receive news and the latest information
You can receive regular email bulletins with the latest news and information about upcoming meetings, social events, fundraising activities, and so on.
6. Attend special events and training
WA Labor has many events and training sessions for its members, including regular social functions, a new members seminar, office bearers seminar, policy forums and State Conference (click here for more information about coming events).
7. Increase your knowledge
Becoming involved in your local branch, helping with election campaigns and talking with Labor Party members will increase your knowledge about issues and the political process, and help you develop new skills.
8. Join Young Labor
All members aged between 16 and 26 automatically join Young Labor – the Labor Party’s youth wing. Young Labor is an excellent vehicle for 16 to 26 year olds to meet like-minded people and debate current issues.
